Leave a light in the window. Someone is still waiting. The street has finished its last argument. A bicycle ticks by, then the dark takes the sound back. You leave the chair where it was, the book open at the same sentence, the cup not yet washed. If they come tonight they should recognise the house: not prepared, exactly, but not abandoned either. The glass holds a small square of the room and throws it at the road. You sit outside that square. Most of the furniture has agreed to be shadow. The clock is too loud, then it is nothing. A car turns at the corner and does not stop. You think of the message you did not send, and of the one you sent too late, and of how waiting rearranges a room without moving a single chair. Hours later the same light is still doing its small work. It does not fill the room. It only keeps a place from disappearing. You walk the length of the hallway to make sure the rest of the house has not invented another task for you. It has not. The quiet is stubborn and useful. You count the steps back, then you count them again, because counting is something the hands can do while the rest of you stays at the glass. A draught finds the sash. The curtain lifts, falls, lifts. For a moment the light crosses the ceiling, then it returns to the window as if it had never left. You remember another winter, another pane, a different room, and how the house learned a posture from being left on. Waiting is a kind of housekeeping. The book still holds the same sentence. You do not turn the page. Turning the page would be a decision, and tonight is for keeping still. In the kitchen a second light waits over the table. The letter is still there, folded along its oldest crease. Nobody has decided whether to send it. The window in that room is open too. Night comes in without asking and goes through the pages as if they were another street. You read the first line again. It is not better than it was. It is only truer because the hour is later. A moth tests the shade and leaves. You put the pen down. Somewhere a neighbour closes a door with care, which is a sound you did not know you were collecting. Near dawn the first light is weaker, or the street is stronger. You cannot tell which. You go back upstairs. The waiting has not changed its shape. Someone is still expected. At the glass you pause long enough to see your own face, dim, and the square of road beyond it. You do not turn the last light off. You leave it for the person the house is still rehearsing. A scene to return to: the room is quiet, but the window is open.
